Locum life

Fun things about being the fill-in doctor:

  • seeing how other people set up their offices
  • learning the different Electronic Medical Record systems
  • meeting new groups of patients
  • getting on the “good side” of all the local docs by giving them their first vacations in AGES
  • being in-demand

Less fun things:

  • the doctor-shoppers who ask “Ooh, are you setting up here and can I switch?” (answer: no, you’ve got a great doctor in Dr. X)
  • the paperwork takes WAY longer because I tend to need to trend all blood results and compare new imaging to old before making a decision, and I don’t know anyone!
  • not necessarily knowing all the local resources for a given problem (hmm… marriage counsellors? urr…)
